Sunrise at Mulkirigala Rock Cave Temple

Get an early start by visiting Mulkirigala Cave Temple. Often called “Little Sigiriya,” the apex of the rock is 675 feet (533 rock-cut steps) from the ground. This ancient monastery dates back to the 3rd century B.C. and is best seen at sunrise or sunset for stunning vistas. Throughout history, and since the Kandyan period, Kings have modified this complex, showcasing its importance as a sacred site.

    Highlights of the Temple

    The Hummanaya “Ocean Blow Hole”

The only natural blowhole in Sri Lanka, Hummanya, is an ocean blowhole, the second largest in the world. This natural ocean wonder happens every few seconds or minutes, depending on the sea conditions. Located in the small fishing village and rocky coast of Kudawella, this natural phenomenon attracts visitors to encounter the “hoo” sound and the thrill of the cannon of water shooting upwards when the sea pushes against the submerged caverns underneath.

    Highlights

The sea spray shoots up between 25-30 metres
The area also has a small information centre and a viewing platform.

Enjoy a Refreshing Dip at Silent Beach

Take some time off before lunch to enjoy secluded Silent Beach. With warm turquoise waters and white sands, the beach offers a welcome respite after the morning’s adventures.

    Lunch on the beach

Enjoy the fresh seafood that Tangalle has to offer. With its fishing harbour and numerous local fishing communities, Tangalle serves up regional and international seafood dishes in a luxury hotel ambience or local seaside cafés to suit any craving in the setting of your choice.

    Our Recommendations

    Kayaking in Rekawa Lagoon

We have included three activities in Rekawa, a short distance from Tangalle. The first is a magical kayak ride through the enchanting Rekawa Lagoon.

This coastal body, separated by a tiny strip of land, is the perfect place to unwind and explore the fauna and flora of the lagoon in tranquillity, with its cool lagoon breezes.

    Rekawa Beach

After the kayaking, cool off at the pristine Rekawa Beach as the sun goes down, enjoying a refreshing dip and leisurely sunset strolls.

    Rekawa Turtle Watch

The Rekawa beach is a protective haven for five sea turtle species who journey hundreds of miles to lay their eggs on the beach sands. The conservation project ensures the protection of these eggs until they are hatched and little ones set off back to sea. While this activity happens daily, the best months are between April and July at night (tours start at 7:45 pm onwards) to witness the turtles laying their eggs. Join the conservation team on their night prowl with infrared lighting and, with some luck, be a lucky observer of a turtle laying its eggs or, more rarely, the young ones running back to the ocean (this usually happens in the early morning hours).

    Signature Dining

End your day with a signature dining experience at one of Tangalle’s Hotels. Be sure to pre-book the dining option by design, location, and cuisine. A tailormade option usually includes a secluded location overlooking the ocean or on the beach and your butler and chef.
