Rekawa Beach
A few kilometres from Tangalle lies Rekawa Beach. A vast expanse of white sand gently caresses the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. Be surprised by the beauty of this hidden beach gem, where beauty, calm and seclusion weave a web of intimacy. The friendly locals will entice you into their shopping huts for ice-cold water, cool lollypops or a local fruit drink.
As per marine researchers, five of seven sea turtle species are found here. These include Green, Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley and Leatherback. The Leatherback turtles are the rarest and most endangered marine turtles worldwide. If you're lucky, you may witness an extraordinary moment of experiencing the hatching of a leatherback turtle egg and a curious young one peering out into the world for the first time at the nearby Turtle Watch Project.
While it is more famous as a marine zone and turtle hatchery, don’t discount Rekawa Beach as a beach paradise. With its scenic and intimate landscape, It is truly worth a visit.
