A Romantic Escape to Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary
East of Tangalle, about 45 minutes away, lies a bird-watching eco-paradise, The Kalametiya Sanctuary. While birds are the show's stars, the sanctuary boasts a rich ecosystem with diverse plant life, fish species, and reptiles. You might even spot some mammals like monkeys or wild boar with some luck. Open daily between 8 am - 5 pm. Explore the wetlands, a zero carbon emission park, by boat or on foot. ( we recommend a sanctuary guide to maximise your experience). With over 150 species of birds to be found here, including resident, migratory and endemic species, Kalametiya feels like a real ornithology experience.
Look for large pelicans, herons, egrets, open-billed storks, colourful kingfishers, and even the majestic Sri Lankan junglefowl.
