Witness a beautiful work of mother nature, The Tangalle Hummanaya, an ocean blowhole in Sri Lanka that is among the most popular places to visit in the south. This ocean Blowhole in Tangalle is the only one of its kind in Sri Lanka and the second-largest ocean blowhole in the world. This geographical oddity occurs due to a cavity in the surface rocks pushing the oncoming waves to the surface. The Hummanya is located on a cliffside setting with beautiful Indian ocean views. The oncoming sea waves push through a cavern in the rocks to create a gush of water that leaps up towards the sky with the sound of “ho,” hence its name in Singhalese, ‘Hummanya’.
Located in the fishing village of Kudawella, just 20 minutes from Tangalle, you need to walk through a winding pathway, and incline steps around 20 minutes after parking your park to reach the cliffside setting of the Hummanya.
Even from a distance away, you can hear the intermittent sounds of ‘ho-ho’ as the water shoots out of the cliffside caverns. The best time to see the spray and sound at its best is during the “off-season” months of April- September when the sea is rougher, and the waves crash harder into the cavern, creating the perfect pressure for the ocean spray to be an even more awesome spectacle. The cliffside setting is magical, with panoramic views of the ocean.
The best time to view the blowhole is morning or evening, as it can get warm during the day. Get ready to be splashed by the hissing sea spray as it shoots into the sky!
