Sigiriya and Pidurangala are volcanic hills rising from the jungle plains and are steeped in history. Pidurangala Rock is most famous for the views from its summit. The moderately shorter yet more challenging trek to the top than Sigiriya is a couple’s favourite for mesmerising photos of the vivid jungle landscapes.

Sigiriya had a history of being a place for meditating monks before it was Kashyapa’s fortress. As the story goes, King Kashyapa (477-495 A.D.), who committed patricide and usurped the throne from his brother, the legitimate heir to the throne, chose Sigiriya as his fortress, fearing his brother’s wrath. Kashyapa is believed to have relocated the monks resident at Sigiriya to the Pidurangala Rock area, building a new monastery in Pidurangala known as “Uppalavanna Kashyapa Giri Viharaya”, as the king started the work to fortify the Sigiriya Rock to hold his royal palace.
