A Birdwatcher's Paradise
Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary
Just a scenic 1 hour and 45-minute drive north of Puttalam lies the Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary, a haven for hundreds of avian species. Nestled between the pristine coast, vibrant mangroves, and freshwater tanks, this sanctuary boasts a unique ecological tapestry, making it one of the six prestigious RAMSAR Wetlands in Sri Lanka. Here, the salty kiss of the ocean mingles with the lush greenery of mangroves and the tranquillity of freshwater tanks. This diverse ecosystem provides the perfect breeding ground for an incredible 150 species of water birds, creating a symphony of feathers and melodies.
Anawilundawa also offers a glimpse into a thriving ecosystem. Keep your eyes peeled for many exotic fish, amphibians, mammals, and reptiles that call this sanctuary home. Spot the elusive rusty-spotted cat, witness the grace of the Indian otter, or marvel at the sight of the endemic slender loris.
Birdwatchers will be in their element here. Look out for a spectacular colony of herons, including the open bill and the great cormorant. The white ibis, egret, the fascinating pheasant-tailed jacana, and the purple swamp hen all call this home. With 20 resident mammal species and a staggering 74 species of butterflies, Anawilundawa promises a delightful sensory experience for nature lovers. Best of all, it is a year-round experience; however, for migratory wonders, plan your visit between October and April to witness a breathtaking display of feathered visitors.
