The historical texts discuss a 5th-century church built in Anuradhapura for Persian travellers. However, Christianity arrived and expanded in Sri Lanka with the arrival of the Portuguese invaders who captured the coastline of Sri Lanka in the 16th century. The city of Negombo is also referred to as “Little Italy,” probably because of its predominantly Catholic population and Catholic churches. More than 25 Roman Catholic churches function to provide sanctuaries of worship for the Catholic population. Some of the more prominent and popular places for explorations include St.Stephens Church, St. Anthony’s Church, and the most distinguished church in Negombo, St. Mary’s Church, one of the largest cathedrals on the island.
An iconic church of historical importance and beautiful architecture, it is a famous church of the devout Catholics of Negombo. Located on Grand Street in the heart of Negombo, the church features a rose-coloured tingle to the building and is one of the largest Roman Catholic Cathedrals in Sri Lanka. The church has fascinating and colourful alabaster imagery, murals, paintings, and sculptures of popular saints on the upper levels and ceilings. A local Buddhist painter, N.S. Godamanne, painted the unique depictions of Christ on the inside roof.
The Church is also popular for its strong roots in celebrating festivals important in the Christian calendar, such as Easter and Christmas. The most popular feast is, however, the feast held in honour and devotion to the Virgin Mary, where pilgrims from all over the country flock for the festival observances.
