Angurukaramulla Temple, also known locally as Bodhirajaramaya, is an iconic Buddhist Temple. Although Negombo is a majority Catholic and Christian Town, it also has a significant Buddhist and Muslim population, and this temple is one of its iconic Buddhist heritage sites.
The temple is most popular for its Makara Thorana, or Dragon Head archway, which stands guard over it. This decorative art and architecture are found in many ancient temples on the island.
While the exact origins of the temple are a mystery, parts of the original temple are believed to be over three centuries old. The temple has many exciting features for visitors to explore. The reclining Buddha, about 6 metres, is considered one of the longest in Sri Lanka. The temple also has an old library, some estimate is as old or even built before the temple itself, the home of many religious and literary kids. View a host of beautiful and colourful depictions of the Buddha, ancient kings, queens, and deities paying homage after the Buddha’s enlightenment.
The temple also features many stone and wooden sculptures, Buddhist murals, paintings, and a white stupa. A contemplative experience, the Temple is a historic and spiritual sanctuary to explore.
