Secret Beach and Niyunwella Beach
Discover Mirissa's crown jewel-Secret Beach! Getting here from the main beach requires a vehicle as it’s a few kilometres away. If travelling by car, you can travel about 60% of the distance and then the vehicle has to be parked in designated parking, as the road narrows, and only tuk-tuks, bikes, or our preferred method of walking to the beach is allowed. Take the walking option, if time permits, to either Secret Beach, Niyunwella Beach or both! These secluded shores offer tranquillity and stunning beauty. While the secret beach is the more popular, Niyunwella Beach is now the actual ‘secret beach’, less known and less crowded. Another reason why we loved Niyunwella Beach is due to the lovely forested pathway that leads up to the beach itself, making it feel like a jungle beach path. (To Niyunwella, follow the same route as to Secret Beach, and then watch out for a handwritten signpost pointing you to the turnoff leading you down to the beach).
From Mirrissa town, turn off to Harbour Road in front of the Cargills supermarket on Galle Road. A small Buddhist altar on a hilltop marks your point to disembark if in a car and continue by foot or tuk-tuk.
Secret Beach is well-supplied with sunbeds, refreshments, seating, and hammocks. There is also a rocky pathway leading up to a beautiful sunset point for photography.
While Secret Beach remains the most well-known and popular, we preferred Niyunwella Beach, which we found almost deserted. In our opinion, Niyunwella is the ‘real’ secret beach of the two!
Escape to the hidden beach coves of Secret and Niyunwella beaches and enjoy a sun-drenched day of enchanting beach moments.
