Spanning 147 acres at an elevation of 460 metres above sea level, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens boasts a breathtaking diversity of plant life. Over 4,000 species call this horseshoe-shaped peninsula home, including rare endemics and even some species extinct in the wild. The majestic Mahaweli River, Sri Lanka’s longest river, gracefully flows around the gardens, adding to the scenic splendour.
Originally a Royal pleasure garden from 1780-1798, the garden was officially commissioned as a Royal Botanical Park in 1821. The Garden was the Allied Headquarters of Asia for a short spell during WW II.
Today, the garden is a sprawling park also dedicated to various botanical conservation, preservation and plant study projects including the ex-situ conservation of plants, the study of ethnobotany and floriculture. The magnificent splendour of these gardens is highlighted by gigantic tropical trees, hundreds of Orchid varieties, a Cacti display, a vibrant flower garden and a sprawling lush green lawn. The Palm Tree collection is known to be one of the very best in all of Asia with over 200 varieties.
