Just an hour's drive from Ella, this hidden gem unveils its splendour along a small road branching off at the Co-Op building at Dewathura. Following this road leads adventurers to a quaint footpath, winding its way to the summit of the magnificent Habarathawa Falls.

    To behold the beauty of this waterfall, visitors must descend slightly from the left side, where nature's spectacle awaits. Recently, a steel structure with steps has been erected, offering enhanced vantage points for visitors to admire the cascading waters in all their glory. Moreover, the tranquil surroundings make this location ideal for a refreshing dip, adding to the allure of this picturesque spot.

    Nestled within the jungle along the Ella-Wellawaya Road in the Monaragala district, Ellawala Falls, also called Secret Falls, is a beautiful jungle waterfall. This picturesque waterfall, located approximately 5 km from Wellawaya Town and just under an hour from Ella, gracefully descends a modest 17 feet before gently caressing the natural pool below. The tranquil waters of this pool offer an inviting respite, perfect for a leisurely bath amid nature's embrace.

    En route to Ellawala Falls, travellers encounter the enchanting Alikota Ara reservoir, adding to the allure of the journey. Here, too, lies the opportunity for a refreshing dip in the spill canal, enhancing the overall experience of this hidden oasis.

    The best time to visit is in November and December when the waterfall reaches its peak splendour.

    While the natural pool is deemed safe for bathing, exercise caution, especially during rainy days when water levels may rise significantly.

    Amidst the lush jungles of the Karandagolla area along the Ella-Wellawaya Road, Pallewela Ella Waterfalls beckon adventurers seeking a tranquil escape near Ella. Just 10-15 minutes away from town, it is also known as Alikota Ella. Falling from a decent height of 30 feet, this waterfall has recently gained popularity thanks to nearby hotels showcasing its natural splendour and offering activities like abseiling.

    Cascading in approximately five segments over rugged rock faces, Pallewela Ella enchants visitors with its beauty and remoteness.

    To get to this waterfall, there’s an unmarked concrete narrow road on the left of the main Ella-Wellawaya Road, signalling the path to the waterfall. The final stretch is a short trek through a forest.

    Kithara Ella, also known as Kithal Ella, descends from a height of 75 feet and is a captivating addition to the must-see waterfalls around Ella. While finding an exact route to Kithal Ella may pose a challenge, the easiest way is to journey along the path from Ella Station to Kithalella Railway Station, just under 2 km.

A 30-minute drive from Ella, this location has many local names such as “Balleketuwa Waterfall”, “Balleketuwa Nature Pool and “Ballaketuwa Komukan Oya”. The 26-foot waterfall is located in a secluded area off the radar and is a beautiful slice of paradise. Being relatively unknown, it’s a great place to spend some quiet time while you explore and even take a cool bath in the natural rock pool.

    A local secret, Gotuwala Ella, is around 20 minutes from Ella. Nestled in the village of Gotuwala, also known as Gotuwela, close to the Nine Arches Bridge in Demodara, lies the secret and picturesque Gotuwala Ella waterfall. This hidden gem can only be admired from the railway line, requiring hikers to trek along the tracks from either Ella or Demodara.

    You will embark on a hike from Ella Railway Station towards Demodara Station, admiring the beauty of the Nine Arch Bridge on your way. After approximately 2.5 kilometres, continue for another kilometre, where you'll encounter a bridge. Here, you can discover the waters of Gotuwala Ella gracefully flowing 50 feet from above and gently flowing beneath the railway track.

    Important Note: This railway track comprises narrow, unprotected rail bridges and tunnels. Therefore, you should familiarise yourself with the train schedule for the track you’re traversing. Exercise caution and respect local regulations during your exploration.
