Nestled amidst emerald hills near Ella, Ravana Ella Waterfall is a legendary waterfall in Ella. Named after the mysterious Sri Lankan ‘demon’ King Ravana from the Indian epic Ramayana. Easily accessible from the roadside, about 20 minutes from Ella town, this waterfall showcases a magical three-tier fall. During the rainy season, it transforms into a majestic curtain of water, while in the dry season, it reveals glistening pools ideal for a refreshing dip or romantic photoshoot.
Steeped in legend, the nearby rock cave is famous for having been one of the hiding places used by King Ravana after he abducted Queen Sita from India and brought her to Sri Lanka. The Indian epic Ramayana details the abduction and subsequent battles between Ravana and Rama, which has left its mark all over the island, with many places being identified as places of significance during this great battle. Archaeological excavations in the cave and the surroundings have shown signs of the cave area being inhabited by early man for over 25,000 years.
A short 10-minute drive from Ella, Ravana can easily be viewed by the side of the road. While climbing up to the waterfall zenith is usually not encouraged (and recently even prohibited), the serene surroundings offer plenty of beautiful landscape views. An 82-foot fall, Ravana is one of the smaller waterfalls on the island but is extremely popular to its legendary status and beautiful 3-tier cascade. The waterfall is most glorious during the rainy season between October and January to view its immense majesty. With plenty of local shops and facilities nearby, this waterfall is one of the island’s most easily accessible cascades and provides the opportunity for captivating photography.
