Galle Face Green, is a sprawling oceanside park, right in the heart of the city – it is a historic beach park in Colombo. Set against an ocean backdrop for couples to enjoy, this green lawn offers many options for recreational enjoyment. A popular hangout for couples and families alike, the park is a haven for exercise enthusiasts, romance seekers and kite flyers. The park is lined with a eclectic mix of street food, restaurants and even a shisha bar. However, it’s most popular for its evening entertainment sponsored by mother nature, where spellbinding sunsets can be witnessed against the ocean backdrop.
The Port City Marina next to Galle Face is also where the luxury catamarans are anchored – get ready to be whisked away on a romantic sunset cruise. Surrounded by luxury hotels and shopping malls, a visit to the Green can easily be combined with a spa treatment and shopping followed by sundowners and dining.
This iconic landscape is where the colonial British Governor, Sir Henry Ward first introduced the sport of golf to the island. Immediately following this introduction, the Royal Colombo Golf Club was instituted at the Galle Face Green.
However, due to the large crowds that were attracted to the green, the club was soon relocated to accommodate the growing interest in the sport and the large crowds. Over time, Galle Face Green has also played host to other sports such as polo, rugby, cricket and tennis. In more recent years Galle Face has also been used for military parades on the nation’s Independence Day.
Today the Galle Face Green is a popular hangout, surrounded by luxury hotels, pubs and shopping malls, there is no shortage of things to do for couples during a visit to the area.
A place to mingle with the locals, the evenings are when the fun begins with crowds thronging to the oceanside lawn for fun, relaxation, food and of course enjoying the highlight of magical sunsets.
For some retail therapy head over to the One Galle Face Mall located right opposite the Green. A short walk will also take you to the Dutch Hospital Shopping Promenade. If it’s a bit of relaxation that’s required, all the nearby hotels offer couple spa treatments, steam rooms and saunas to unwind and freshen up before dinner.
The allure of Galle Face is in the host of hotels nearby for continuing beyond the sunset into the night. If it’s a rooftop sundowner you crave, head over to the Sky Lounge at The Kingsbury Colombo. Alternatively, the Kingsbury’s poolside Honey Beach Bar is a hip and happening not to mention fun place to unwind. The historic Galle Face Hotel also has popular bar and dining options beachside with Firebeach, The Verandah and King of the Mambo to choose from.
Sit down to a romantic dinner at one of the many hotel restaurants along the stretch. Shangri-La, Taj Samudra, ITC Ratnadeepa, The Kingsbury, Galle Face Hotel and even Ministry of Crab are all just a few steps from the Green.
